Gears of War: E-Day is both a 20th-anniversary return and a deliberate entry point — The Coalition calls it "the best place to jump into the Gears universe." Here's what a beginner actually needs before October 6.
What Kind of Game Is This?
A third-person, cover-based shooter with a ~14-hour origin-story campaign (solo, 2-player split-screen, or 4-player online co-op) plus a full multiplayer suite: Horde Siege (12-player PvE) and 4v4 Versus. No open world, no battle pass.
The Five Changes That Matter
- Movement is new — sprint-to-slide, a dedicated jump, low-ground cover, and a re-mapped controller (A = cover, LS = sprint, Y = vault). Details in /gameplay/movement-cover.html
- Enemies are smart — Locust flank, smoke and climb. Standing in one cover piece is death. See /gameplay/combat-system.html
- Bullets have travel time — long shots need leading; the Longshot is a positioning weapon, not an aim check
- The city is a character — arenas degrade over three days; learn routes, not static maps
- The squad is the mechanic — revives, shared pressure and the "Never Fight Alone" design; four players see four different opening views of the same disaster
Which Mode Should You Start With?
- Campaign first — it's the story the whole site exists around, and co-op with one friend (split-screen or online) is the classic way to play it
- Then Horde Siege — the four classes (Assault, Breacher, Marksman, Medic) teach the sandbox gently, and shared objectives mean a losing squad still contributes. See /multiplayer/horde-siege.html
- Versus last — it's the most skill-expressive mode and the wall-bounce meta is real; fine to skip until the campaign hooks you. See /multiplayer/versus.html
Do You Need to Play the Older Gears First?
No — but it helps. E-Day is built as an entry point: the squad learns what the Locust are while you do. What older games give you is resonance — the Lancer means more when you know what it becomes. The short route is Gears 1 (or Reloaded) plus Gears 2. Full routes and the timeline live in /world/series-timeline.html.
One canon warning: E-Day is a prequel, but it was built second — release order is still the way the story lands best.

Questions
Is E-Day a good first Gears game?
Yes — The Coalition designed it as the best entry point into the universe, and the origin story explains everything as the squad learns it.
I stopped at Gears 3. Will E-Day make sense?
Yes. It's set 14 years before the first game and features only the young cast — nothing from Gears 4/5 is required knowledge.
What should I do first when the game launches?
Campaign (any Bravo Squad member — try Mags for a different view), then Horde Siege with a balanced squad: one of each class.
Is there anything to grind before launch?
No — the beta is over, and progression carries forward only for beta participants.
